My friend Lauren Brent and her colleagues have published a paper on the #evolution of #menopause and maternal investment in #orcas, in the latest issue of #CurrentBiology. I'm really excited to read this research! They're addressing an important and long-standing question in #EvolutionaryBiology. And it's #OpenAccess.

'The mutant flowers were UV reflective as expected but additionally contained low levels of visible anthocyanin pigments. Hawkmoths strongly preferred the wild-type P. axillaris over the myb-fl mutant, whereas both social and solitary bee preference depended on the level of visible color of the mutants.'

Did #ichthyosaurs live in groups, migrating to breeding sites? Very interesting work on #Triassic Shonisaurus locality in Nevada yesterday in #currentbiology by Neil Kelley et al yesterday 🤩 I commented to Wired here:

"Here, we examine the gut contents of Ediacaran animals using biomarker molecules. We show that 558-million-year (Ma)-old tube worm-like Calyptrina and mollusc-like Kimberella possessed a gut and shared a diet of green algae and bacteria. Despite their ancient age, sterol metabolism within the gut of both organisms was already comparable to extant invertebrates."
