North American Aviation P-51D Mustang. The P-51 was designed to meet a requirement from the American-based British Purchasing Commission during WW2. The BPC wanted North American to build Curtiss P-40s under licence, but North American said 'We can do better than that!' - and they did. However, it wasn't until the Mustang airframe was re-engined with the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin, that a star was born. Able to escort USAAF heavy bombers all the way to Berlin, it was a massive psychological blow to the Nazi regime. This example is being displayed at an air show in Massachusetts.

Here's another shot of one of my favourite Curtiss Warhawks, 'The Jacky C'. This is a P-40M-10-CU is finished in the colours of the famous 'Flying Tigers' who flew against the Japanese in WW2. The aircraft actually saw service with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
