Friday’s #ImageOfTheDay. The ruins of #Lindisfarne Priory on #HolyIsland where a new memorial has been created to mark the site of St #Cuthbert’s original burial-place in the former Anglo-Saxon monastery. These ruins are of the Benedictine Priory that was refounded as a cell of Durham Cathedral in 1083. The Priory Museum has also been revamped: it reopens this weekend.

This is the Lindisfarne Gospel Book open at the initial words (“incipit page”) of St John’s Gospel, “In the beginning was the Word”, read at many Christmas services. Opposite is St John’s “carpet page”. The Book, written “in honour of God and St Cuthbert” dates from the early 8th century and was created on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.
