more great work by David Newhoff exposing yet another gish gallop (sadly, this one at a generally good site, The Scholarly Kitchen) deliberately & badly misreading the law, the judge's decision, & the underlying ideas in vs Hachette illusionofmore.com/internet-ar

surprisingly nuanced and balanced coverage of the (very good & accurate) judgment in the "National Emergency Library" case, with both authors and librarians quoted who see through IA's long-term shell game to deprive creators of rights to what we create.

CEO of Author's Guild: "We totally appreciate the fact that some authors don’t care about making money from their books. But it’s got to be the author’s choice.” insidehighered.com/news/2023/0

"It’s so easy to get seduced by these technologies. They feel like magic. You put in a prompt; the oracle replies. There’s a natural impulse to ooh and aah. But at the rate things are going now, we may be oohing and aahing our way to a future no one wants."

very good debunking of typical dogma, here with regard to by @sigalsamuel

is one of the main leading edges that makes up the core of dogma. it is an effort to strip creators of their intellectual property rights, and replace them with a doctrine of raw power: whoever has the power to take something from someone else should be able to do it.

it needs to portray copyright owners as "giants" & those who benefit from stealing creator materials--Google, Facebook, etc--as "little guys."

cui bono?

1/ if has managed to convince you that their effort to strip authors of is a "battle for libraries," I suggest reading and thinking more.

it is shocking (not shocking) to see how easily this spreads.

Internet Archive is attacking one of the bases on which actual libraries operate.

& to be clear, this suit has NOTHING to do with the Wayback Machine.

it has to do with IA illegally distributing published, copyrighted books.

pioneering civil rights attorney Carrie Goldberg (@cagoldberglaw@twitter) files suit in dystopian antidemocratic hellscape Great Britain, where the lack of protections means platforms might be sued for enabling sex trafficking of minors.

, Golderberg's team says, "was able to become a 'hunting ground for predators' because of the random matching system & the lack of warnings or age verification."

what a perfect example of nihilism, ad hominem, & contempt for other human beings masquerading as belief in "progress" @hypervisible

if only people like @lmsacasas & others had noted this before (see #2, written 2014) thefrailestthing.com/2014/03/3

one of the most pernicious lies is that gives a "voice to the voiceless."

social media "gives" a "voice" to everyone. for every example of voicing-the-voiceless, there are 10 examples of voicing the already-very-voiced.
