new David Newhoff (@iom@twitter): "Libraries should spend their limited resources on building and maintaining personal relationships with communities rather than waste time with complicated and erroneous workarounds to #copyright rights. Frankly, the well-funded academics and organizations peddling CDL would do more good for libraries if they just hosted a damn bake sale." https://illusionofmore.com/controlled-digital-lending-is-a-dubious-proposal-in-every-sense/ #InternetArchive #cyberlibertarianism #libraries

this was c2003 or earlier.
the student asked, "doesn't open source solve that?"
given the pointedness of the question, and the seriousness of the setting, you might have imagined he'd have *some* account of what he meant when he asked the question.
of course he didn't.
that's how #cyberlibertarianism works.
the problem with #ChatGPT (& other generative #AI software) is not that it's closed-source.
the problem with tax software in the US is not that it's closed-source.

David Newhoff:
"it is time for policymakers and librarians to understand the reason why this two-pronged campaign against copyright rights in ebooks is losing—because the academics, organizations, and lobbyists behind the effort are lying."

democracies using laws to regulate technology & the economy pose an existential risk to humanity;*
technology is our main hope for "progress," because technological progress IS social progress;
if there are any societal risks posed by technology, & there mostly aren't, they should be judged & managed by technologists. the sheeple should keep their mouths shut.
* democratic govts may use these powers to prohibit their own use of tech, but nobody else's.
"X for social good" is primarily a way to promote X, not social good
David Newhoff analyzes the very clear & firmly grounded judge's decision in #InternetArchive vs Hachette:
"IA has exploited, and will continue to exploit, this self-inflicted, quixotic lawsuit as a platform to lie to the public that it is just 'doing what libraries do' as part of a broader effort to undermine the value and purpose of #copyright rights." https://illusionofmore.com/internet-archive-should-but-wont-quit-while-its-behind/

which side of the political aisle does this flyer come from?
(rhetorical question)
at most universities, including mine, the use in classes of tools like #ChatGPT to do things like write essays, answer essay questions & generate programing code, is already prohibited by the honor code, which says all work must be the student's own, period. it's not remotely ambiguous. (unless prof specifically allows it ofc.)
based on the response from some admin & many faculty to those of us who point this out, you'd think we'd just declared ourselves satanists.
technological populism is one of the main forms of #cyberlibertarianism. it's in large part how we got here. look at the early statements made by the originators of nearly every tech behemoth right now: we are the good people. we are going to harness this technology (despite your misguided Luddite warnings) to save the world.
technological populism is the problem. it is not the solution to the problem. but it always comes back to say it is.
#cyberlibertarianism is the difference between thinking the major risk to society comes from unregulated technological development, vs thinking that democratic oversight (and in some cases abolition) of technology is the major risk to society

how #cyberlibertarianism works: the correct headline here should be "more than a dozen orgs act as digital tech industry shills--for at least half of them that's their full-time job--demanding Congress not shut down a hugely abusive & invasive tech product because '#freespeech'" https://thehill.com/policy/technology/3914606-free-speech-organizations-team-up-to-push-back-on-potential-tiktok-ban/ #tiktok
