It kind of spoils the fun of exposed & when you consider how much sand and dust is a problem without some sort of flexible protective covering over joints.

One can definitely mess with transparency but having nothing at all without some sort of mechanism to prevent foreign object intrusion is just asking for trouble.

Thinking about how piston engines (cars, little propellor planes) run on 4 stroke internal combustion -- as they say, suck, squeeze, bang, blow (intake gas, compress gas, ignite gas, expel hot pressurized gas as motive power)

Jet engines take that process but do all 4 steps simultaneously instead of in sequence.

This is a conceptual change akin to the change from traditional piecework construction by hand to assembly lines.

Lots to analyze! Where else do we see this dynamic?

"A wild tale of how 's engineers and a British management consultant dared challenge corporations and spy agencies - and almost won"

A 9 X ~1 hr podcast with lots of archival audio and recent interviews. Listened to the first 2 and can already recommend.

Thank you 😀 this is gold.

I personally reckon the interaction of high volumes of quality thought is what gives the data from these servers value (to me), so I'd be hesitant to put a hurdle of payment there, and I personally would probably err more towards , likely in edge banners. But I'm an ignoramous! I think you're right to allude to the benefits of (and challenge of) anything that resembles keeping the feedback loop of advertising dosh closed, even when posts are propagated across the . I bloody love a closed feedback loop.

Thank you for the thought and care you put into this!

Talking about the “nervous system” in isolation from the rest of the body and its environment is like trying to figure out what is the automobile about by looking at its motor running on a stand. You need to look at where the “rubber hits the road” to really understand what’s going on.

Only “bodies can do things” not the isolated nervous systems. Of course, brains have a within the body, the same way that individual bodies (with their respective brains) have a function within a social organization.

The nervous “(sub)system” has no need to be in direct contact with the environment, but it also can’t function or even survive (is not viable) without the support of all the other body parts, some of which are and must be in direct contact with the .

According to , The whole purpose of the nervous system and cognition is the survival of the body:

“The major function of the brain is actually not to sit around and discuss things like we are doing now, but it is to make decisions - it has to decide whether to fight or run or eat …”

academia.edu/6576779/Rosen_and

Thinking about the nervous “system” in isolation is typical for thinking which separates the (management) system from the system (the plant) and does not recognize the fact that they depend on each other and should be thought of as one system.

People are “social animals” and the emergent capability and knowledge of an as a system of people are quite different from the collection of all the individual learning capabilities and knowledge of the individuals it is composed of, so it is, therefore, appropriate to treat the organization as another dynamical system.

Survey of Definition and Determination • 2
inquiryintoinquiry.com/2023/04

In the early 1990s, “in the middle of life's journey” as the saying goes, I returned to grad school in a systems engineering program with the idea of taking a more systems-theoretic approach to my development of Peircean themes, from signs and scientific inquiry to logic and information theory.

Two of the first questions calling for fresh examination were the closely related concepts of definition and determination, not only as Peirce used them in his logic and semiotics but as researchers in areas as diverse as computer science, cybernetics, physics, and systems sciences were finding themselves forced to reconsider the concepts in later years. That led me to collect a sample of texts where Peirce and a few other writers discuss the issues of definition and determination. There are copies of those selections at the following sites.

Excerpts on Determination

What follows is a Survey of blog and wiki posts on Definition and Determination, with a focus on the part they play in Peirce's interlinked theories of signs, information, and inquiry. In classical logical traditions the concepts of definition and determination are closely related and their bond acquires all the more force when we view the overarching concept of constraint from an information-theoretic point of view, as Peirce did beginning in the 1860s.

Twin readings or, to borrow a lovely expression from @NicoleCRust*, an interleaved reading of two books:

📘 Stanisław Lem’s Dialogues, translated by Peter Butko,
📙 Stanisław Lem’s The Truth and Other Stories, translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones.
