Finally, on the way home, I took a picture of the #cyclepath between BudleighSalterton and #Exmouth which stretches about 6 km and avoids motor traffic altogether. I can’t think of many more pleasant routes to #cycle on.

I bought a second hand TV yesterday. It's on the side of my bike here, on a nice cyclepath next to a ludicrously wide road. Five lanes in one direction and four in the other? That's enough to make you think our government was perhaps trying to encourage people to drive more, which indeed has been the case for the last few decades.

After Judy left I took our two dogs for a walk. Judy's tyre tracks melded into the many others.
The snow was not as well cleared from the cycle-paths this morning as has been the case sometimes in the past. I think they were swept, but because more snow fell afterward it was a less than perfect result. In any case, the cycle-paths had less snow than our residential street (those are the lowest priority).

Note the salt. This has been applied daily throughout winter to ensure that cycling remains safe, not only in the city but also out into the countryside to preserve commuting / school travel routes like this one.

This is part of the Assen-Groningen "cycling superhighway". It's four metres wide (+ an extra metre at the left for pedestrians) and will eventually stretch the entire 30 km distance between the two cities. There are already other excellent routes, but this will hopefully let us cycle at a higher average speed as we shouldn't have to stop for traffic. Unfortunately, construction of some parts has been stalled recently.

And then I rode back to Assen, along several more kilometres of cycle-path very well separated from the road.
This is something that I think a lot of cycling advocates in other countries completely miss about the Netherlands. The rural cycling infrastructure is fantastic and really does go pretty much everywhere.

I also included some touristic routes, like here. There's a road for cars here as well as the cycle-path, but while the cycle-path is nice and smooth the "road" consists of mud and potholes. This is a deliberate technique to traffic calm the countryside. There are lots of examples of this locally and I mentioned the idea on my blog many years ago:

It was fairly windy today, 6 on the beaufort scale, but I went on a 50 km round trip to get something for a friend who's been helping with the website recently.

As usual for the Netherlands, most of the journey could be made on cycle-paths, such as this one alongside a main road to the right of the image. We have priority over the upcoming side road.

This location shows something quite interesting: At this point a bidirectional cycle-path changes into a unidirectional path. The width reduces from slightly under 4 m for the bidirectional cycle-path to 2.5 m for the unidirectional path at this location. These are acceptable widths: People can cycle side-by-side and it's possible to overtake safety.
