Redesigning roads and intersections to put humans first – The Bellingen case
Bellingen just 'upgraded' Gleniffer Road (The $5.2M “gate way to the Promised Land”) and NorthBankRoad. Both put fossil fuel vehicles first and forgot emission free mobility for people.
But cyclists and foot traffic deserve the same direct routes that motorists have. Elsewhere they rethink transport planning to promote safer cycling and walking options. Another missed opportunity to put Bellingen on the map for pollution free country cruising.

Today’s #cycle trip was to #Exmouth which is about 18 km away by #bike mostly on #cyclepaths. It has been a bright sunny day but still a bit cool. This is a #photograph of the #ExeEstuary which opens out into the #EnglishChannel. It was #LowTide and so you can see #SandBanks in the middle of the #estuary which form a #habitat for #birds but also a #NavigationalHazard. You can see the opposite #bank too which is in #Starcross.

Rush hour this morning on Bearsden Road in Glasgow vs rush hour on the cycle path alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal which passes underneath it.

Road closure, increased #traffic, #pollution and vegetation (habitat) clearing for four month. Smashing a wider, straighter road through the forest will encourage increased #traffic, #speeding and #roadkill. The stated rationale is to get more visitors to the “the popular tourist destination of the #PromisedLand. ” The 'Scenic Drive' might loose some of that picturesque charm, but one can get faster to the #NeverNever loo.

341 followers · 1384 posts · Server aus.socialWhen I went to school (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) schools were strictly zoned, and most kids rode their bikes or walked to school - with the exception of those who were coming in by bus from rural areas.
Even when I changed schools to pursue an elective for my senior years, I rarely caught the bus, because at the stage I was still able to walk over the big hill in to and from school, whatever the weather.
Car trips to school were exclusively reserved for days when you had unavoidable appointments during school time.
I now live in a regional town with many public and private schools - and as a result, we plan our days to avoid what we call “the arsenic hours.” As in, “I’d rather take arsenic than be driving amongst the school drop off or pick up rush” - it’s so much worse than the morning or afternoon commute peaks.
I can see why parents don’t want to let their children cycle in such traffic. But it’s a policy failure Catch-22.
Public transport, proper cycle paths away from cars and actually going to the places people need, a change to urban planning would help..

38 followers · 36 posts · Server mastodon.scotThere were things I found useful to be able to do quickly/easily on Twitter such as warning fellow #UKCyclingToots or #UKCyclingTweeps in #Edinburgh (and the council) about glass on #CyclePaths, and for a couple of years that was mostly what I used it for. However, I don't know how often these were read; it's just as easy to spend a few minutes sweeping the glass off the path, then using FixMyStreet or council's own reporting form.

It’s generally good to see people of all ages out there; friends, families and some more keen #cyclists but the weekend does bring out what I call #SundayRiders who only come out very occasionally and just generally get in the way or are not fully in control of their #bikes. It tends to be the middle aged who are worst at this...

My journey to work is about one thirds on the #road and the rest is on #cyclepaths which isn't bad considering how poor things were but there is a long way to go for us in the #UK. Many cities now do have electric trams and light railways.
