The biggest ever lotto win in NZ history was 42.2 million dollars on 20 October 2021.
We don't know how much they'll offer for recovery from #cycloneFonterra #cycloneGabrielle. But let's be generous.
Let's say it's double that. 84.4 million dollars.
The Finance minister has said that the cost of repairing the damage will be around 13.5 billion dollars.
Our generous red tory government is offering 0.00625% of the money at best.
"Insulting" is putting it very mildly.

Sorry but the suggestion of funding recovery from #cycloneGabrielle #cycloneFonterra by means of a lottery draw is downright insulting.
The consistent refusal of the ruling class of clawing back the obscene wealth posted by the record profits from banks, supermarkets and energy companies is an attack on the dignity of us all.
It's like offering a band aid to a hemorrhaging patient and expecting a pat in the back.
Tax. The. Rich.
Labour are Tories with another name.

Oh phew, just heard my dad and stepmum are alright and the awesome community that formed on their street during Covid is looking out for each other during this piece of nonsense. #Napier #CycloneFonterra #CycloneGabrielle

It's not a mystery. The science is clear.
We either take bold, radical action immediately or we crash and burn.
Unfortunately the track record of both major parties makes me feel very sceptical about their capacity for anything but Business As Usual.
The Greens are the only ones that at least rhetorically approach the scale of what is necessary, although they probably also fall short.
Nothing would make me happier than to be proven wrong though.

This post by Posting Dad is exactly how I'm feeling too.
Anger and worry for what's coming and not being up for one year more of bullshit and delay.
It won't get better for ages but we can stop it getting a lot worse.

If anything good is going to happen in the aftermath of #cycloneGabrielle #cycloneFonterra, I hope it is it finally changes the minds of the fossils in charge of infrastructure decision making.
Trains make sense.
Bikes make sense.
Car dependency is a major contributor to our emissions profile. We desperately need alternatives yesterday.

Why restoring long-distance passenger rail makes sense in New Zealand – for people and the climate

Kind of obvious but my #gratitude today is for being safe and sound in what is an immeasurable disaster.
Thinking of all those who are affected by the #cycloneGabrielle #cycloneFonterra
#gratitude #cyclonegabrielle #cyclonefonterra
Gonna post this here so we know what to call the next nine climate fuelled disasters.

It's quite telling that catastrophes like #cycloneGabrielle #cycloneFonterra end up being a net positive for GDP.
Shows how we're measuring the wrong things and every time we decide with The Economy™ in mind, we choose to ignore our best interests and keep feeding the infinite inequality machine.

@le_friwi_56 The people we’re most worried about are those without the power and active cell towers to tell us about it. #cycloneGabrielle #cycloneFonterra
And #NZTwits is a legit term from the waves of migration from Twitter, when people were trying to find each other again. We haven’t really needed a collective hashtag since then… maybe until now.

Buckets of rain. Howling winds. We're doing well here but sounds like Emergency responders are swept off their feet.
Reports of the landslip at muriwai sound serious, there's a rather large fire in Dargaville too.
Flooding, felled threes and all the expected too.
#cyclonegabrielle #cyclonefonterra
Apparently a serious landslip in Muriwai took a house out.
FENZ is on the scene.

Raining on and off but mostly on. Wind is kind of constant but not as strong as it was last night.
Feels like just another rainy Auckland day.
But it's meant to be still the prelude to the actual cyclone coming tonight, so don't be fooled. Stay safe.
Personally, I'd rather feel a bit silly for being too safe than regret loss of life of health for not being safe at all.
Guess I'm no Leo Molloy, in that regard.

Āta mārie Aotearoa.
Now it's raining steadily and wind picked up again.
Still doing alright around here.
#cyclonegabrielle #cyclonefonterra
Eerie silent stillness now. Wind pretty much gone. Still no rain.
#cyclonegabrielle #cyclonefonterra
Daily #gratitude today is for being able to stay home while #cycloneGabrielle ( #cycloneFonterra) pass by. 🌀
#gratitude #cyclonegabrielle #cyclonefonterra
Rain has started in Manukau. Thick grey clouds and wind picking up.
But this is not it yet, right?
