@framstag I just discovered #fex #fexsend doesn't want to speak to my server due to "my %SSL = (SSL_version => 'TLSv1');" anymore. I suppose that was meant to disallow using SSLv2/SSLv3, or am I mistaken? Today, however, it disables the possibility to use TLSv1.1-1.3. Also $SSL{SSL_verify_mode} = 0 for Windows feels a little bit odd to me, even #Cygwin should be able to check certs (https://cygwin.com/packages/summary/ca-certificates.html).

@bryanruby @anildash I agree! Horses for courses, right? The windows terminal support keeps getting better, but I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to #PowerShell. When corporate jobs required me to use windows, #Cygwin was always a welcome oasis.

Zum Kopieren bzw. Retten von Daten von einer Festplatte mit defekten Sektoren in Form eines #Festplattenabbild #hdImage #PartitionImage sollte man #ddrescue benutzen, nicht das normale #dd. Das geht sehr viel smarter mit Leseproblemen um und kann sogar neu gestartet werden, wobei es bereits gelesene Sektoren nicht erneut einliest.

Das Tool gibt es sogar unter #cygwin!

Okay, so I have no idea how my #cygwin install got so fucked. It smells like an #antivirus activity, but there is nothing at all in #Avast indicating any responsibility.

I was just trying to fuck around with #mastodon #api ffs, now i may have to reinstall all my #cygwin shit. For farks sake.

#cygwin So updating cygwin encountered three "cannot overwrite in-use files" warnings: cygwin-console-helper.exe, curl.exe, and mintty.exe

There are no such processes running.

And I was only using #Avast after I ditched #Norton for doing the same bullshit

@FineWolf First, #WSL2 *IS* really great! However, I'm not sure that I'd say we've reached "OS doesn't matter". Lots of differences still: GUI programming, filesystem (outside of WSL2), Docker, etc.

Making portable applications is still a bit challenging... even though it's far better than it was.

Also, some of us still have trauma left over from using #Cygwin !

This week, a lab mate asked me for help installing HOMER, a #unix based command line #cli tool which, onto his #windowspc

I’ve been getting pretty comfortable using Unix at the command line on my #macbook so I agreed. And wow, this experience made me appreciate the MacBook terminal like never before.

To get a working Unix-like environment on PC took us a few hours using #cygwin, after which installing HOMER took a few additional hours due to wonky file path behavior, missing basic functions…..

@ygalanter Er, bc is a separate program and not a part of #bash. It’s part of the #POSIX standard that #Linux and #Unix systems (like #macOS) aspire to.

All this is to say it also works fine in #zsh (macOS’s default shell) and even on #Windows with a Unix compatibility later like #Cygwin, #MinGW, or #WSL.

Gott sei Dank gibt es Tools wie #cygwin damit man unter #Windows auch #linux -Tools einsetzen kann.

For the handsome folks that want to try this, here's a tip: the wonderful option --no-admin of the #cygwin installer will cleverly not touch anything UAC-related, thus not raising any alerts to your neighboring sysadmin ;)

@claudiom #WSL is one of the best things that has happened to #Windows for me. Haven't really used #Cygwin since.
Looking forward to when it properly is integrated with native audio and graphics though.

i think i need to provision #pkgsrc in #cygwin. Sounds good.
