#CymbalSaturday here’s a Cymbal & Gong “Midnight Lamp”. They have a Turk top and a finely lathed bottom side, in light weights. C&G is a guy here in Oregon who has cymbals made to his specifications by one of the independent forges in Turkey.
I’ll post a #cymbal video later but I was thinking for #CymbalSaturday could every one of you post an example of one of your favorite cymbal sounds in a song or tune? It doesn’t even have to be a drum heavy track, just something where you heard a cymbal and said “oh hell yeah!”

Well it’s #CymbalSaturday although I think not enough instances are federated with #drumstodon for many people to see our hashtags. Anyway I found a long-sought hard-to-find treasure, a Sabian Jack DeJohnette signature Encore 22” mini bell ride. How’s that for a mouthful? Basically its a thin light ride with a heavy patina coating, and tons of dense hand hammering, including on the shallow small bell. It sounds essentially halfway between a traditional and a flat ride. I love it! #drummer #drums

On #CymbalSaturday let’s talk about how many #cymbals you like to have around your kit at the same time. Are you a maximalist, minimalist, or in the middle? Are your choices influenced by budget, portability, stage footprint, aesthetics, or other factors? Do you have a particular way of deciding which cymbals to use together? If you’re just starting out, do you have an idea of the direction you want to go?

It’s #CymbalSaturday ! What do you like for hihats? Do you prefer the classic 14”, or bigger/smaller? Drier or more toneful? In terms of technique, do you do more closed hat sticking, more open or sloshy sounds, more footwork? If you could change one thing about your current hihats, besides you the player, what would it be?

It’s #CymbalSaturday , let’s talk about china #cymbals! Also swishes, pangs, and other flanged trashy sound makers. Do you have a favorite? Do you like more of a brash klang or more of a washy white noise? Fast or long decay, rivets? Metal, jazz, other genres? Do you always have a china type on your kit, or only occasionally? Do you ride it, or is it only for explosive punctuation?

Let’s talk ride #cymbals! What do you like—loud ping, soft tahh, dry stick click? Do you need your ride to also be a crash? Do you prefer 20, 22, other? Does your genre determine your choice? Do you have a favorite brand, and do all your cymbals have to be one brand? If cost was not an issue, is there a ride you dream of owning? #CymbalSaturday
Here’s a video of the three rides up on my kit today:

It’s #CymbalSaturday and I got some time to check out my new Zildjian 21” K custom hybrid ride. I really like it so far though it’s pretty different from my previous ride. This thing sings when you hit it just right. Smaller sweet spot on the bell but it’s awesome. I love how it sounds so it’s sticking around #zildjian #kcustom

Back on my “three rides on the kit” bs this #CymbalSaturday! 20” Nicky Moon custom flat, 24” 1950’s Zildjian, 20” Cymbal and Gong “Mersey Beat”. All three are nicely crashable! And they are harmonically sweet together. I’ll post a video tomorrow or soon.
I missed #CymbalSaturday but oh well, here’s a Paiste Signature prototype ride. They make a lot of prototypes, mostly subtle variations on existing models, and they sell those for much less money. It’s the best value for a Paiste fan, if you find one you like. This one satisfies my craving for crispy bright stick plus rich easy crashes. The sustain is controlled, which is uncommon with such a bright cymbal with no patina or unlathed parts to damp it. #drum #drums #drummer https://rankett.net/w/wYSnYhCn1TJgC9zcjb7bCG

It’s #CymbalSaturday ! Here’s a weird but very cool one, it’s a Sabian Vault Custom Shop 20” ride. It has skip lathing, lots of hammering, a steeply curved profile, a tall and deeply hammered bell. The sound is unique! I think Tom Waits would dig it. #drums #drumming

Here’s a treat for #CymbalSaturday , a Funch 22” old K clone. It’s thin, bright, and very complex. I’ll post a video this evening. Lasse Funch of Denmark is one of my favorite cymbal smiths working today.
Happy #CymbalSaturday folks! Let’s see some cool pies, share some of you fav cymbals.
For #CymbalSaturday here’s a little demo of my Nicky Moon custom flat ride. I still plan to do a video comparing a few different flats, maybe next week. No rivets in this one, it already has enough shimmer and hiss without them!
I almost forgot #CymbalSaturday ! Here’s a quick demo of one of my favorite rides, a medium weight 22” Zildjian “block stamp” from the 50s. It has a tall and thick bell, and heavy dark patina on both faces. The patina gives the stick more articulation, and keeps the wash from humming or getting out of control.
It’s #CymbalSaturday ! Here is my auxiliary hi hat setup with some 14” Zildjian New Beats. These have a very pleasing slosh that isn’t too loud and fits in nicely set up slightly open so they can sizzle. No longer my primary hats, but these hats sound good with anything honestly.
Continuing on #CymbalSaturday here’s my current selection of flat rides. I have gone through many others that didn’t make the cut. You have to cherry pick pretty much any cymbal regardless of type or brand, but I think flats are the hardest to get right. Good ones are amazing but it’s hard to find one that doesn’t sound like trash. Paiste invented the flat ride, and generally they do it best, in their 602, 2002, and Signature lines, 18 or 20”, if you don’t have the luxury of cherry picking.
