Today in Labor History March 3, 1861: Alexander II of Russia signed the Emancipation Manifesto, freeing serfs. This edict freed more than 23 million people, theoretically giving them full rights of free citizens, including rights to marry freely, own property or a business. The Manifesto also gave them the right to buy land from their former landlords. However, many could not afford to or were prohibited, forcing them to become laborers and wage slaves.

Something interesting to note is that once the #Czar was overthrown in the February revolution, pretty much all #Russians were some flavor of #Socialist. Other than the ruling Social democrats who wanted representative democracy, most of the other parties wanted some form of direct democracy. Hence all power to the soviets. Lenin and to Bolsheviks seized power on the promise of direct democracy, but gradually stripped all democracy as less and less parties were eligible for representing the "people". Bolshevism was always just a cult of Lenin, had literally any of the other socialist parties been a few steps ahead of Lenin, global socialism would have been radically different.
