June anniversaries: three sets of martyrs for Bohemian/#Czech independence:

18 June 1942: the #Czechoslovak paratroopers involved in the assassination of Nazi Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich on 27 May are betrayed and killed or commit suicide in the German assault on the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Prague.

Today it is a national shrine, which includes a historical display and a memorial in the crypt. A ceremony takes place on the street every year on the anniversary

When France collapsed in June, some of the Czechoslovak, #Polish, & British troops were evacuated via the western Atlantic ports in Operation Aerial--far less well known than Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo; more on that next week

Martinů himself remained in Vichy France till 1941, when he was able to go to the US

In his role as Foreign Minister of the #Czechoslovak government-in-exile, Jan Masaryk (d. 10 March 1948) undertook various diplomatic missions, e.g, to the #USSR and #US.
