Today , August 21st 1968, 55 years ago, the Warsaw pact army, at the behest of Soviet Union, invaded then #Czechoslovakia. I will never forget that day when hope was crushed. Which is why I will keep fighting for fairness and democracy and hope wherever I happen to beâŚ.

The level of atrocities is incomparable between the two, but the message is clear: nothing has changed in the Russian Bearâs den.

Fifty-five years ago Russian fascists-disguised-as-communists invaded the former #Czechoslovakia in what was then the largest military operation in Europe since the end of the 2nd World War. The so-called âOperation Danubeâ is now the second largest post-WW2 military operation in Europe, after the Russian fascists threw off their masks and launched a full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022.

For #MedalMonday here is a piece for the best worker in Pieťżany, a town in #Czechoslovakia, today part of #Slovakia. The medal was issued by Pionýr, or Pioneer Organization of the Socialist Youth Union.

7 June 1948: outmaneuvered by the #communists, Czechoslovak President Edvard BeneĹĄ resigns, cementing the results of their February coup.
Ironically, #Czechoslovakia was the only place in the region where the communists enjoyed real popularity. The special cancellation of 8 March 1948 celebrates the Czech-Soviet "friendship sealed in blood" 5 years earlier when Czechoslovak & Red Army troops blunted the Nazi advance at Sokolovo, Ukraine

Karel Zeman was a Czech film maker who seemingly magically combined live action with #StopMotion #animation. In his VynĂĄlez zkĂĄzy [A Deadly Invention] (1958), loosely based on #JulesVerne's Face au Drapeau, a professor is kidnapped by a fiendish count who wants to get his hands on a terrible super-weapon. Underwater pursuits commence! Based on the engravings that accompany the Verne story, Zeman came up with fantastic highly stylised in-camera effects that make the sets, actors and props resemble cross-hatched etchings.
