One son has started playing Final Fantasy III and the other is chasing 112% completion in Hollow Knight and has asked for the soundtrack to be added to our library. Naturally I complied. It's damn fine.
Very much surfing the waves of Dad is Still Cool Beach, but I'm okay with it.
I found a big bag of random switches, key caps and a broken moonlander wing (left wing yo). I don't think I remember my son hugging me _that_ strongly to express his gratitude. #dadops
Sollte ich mal ein Buch über das Elternsein schreiben, wird der Titel "Der Klogang ist ein Gruppensport" sein. #DadOps
I need an interesting podcast that would help Max (7) better understand the significant things of our little blue orb #DadOps
Daughter's girlfriends: we didn't know your dad had tattoos
Daughter: yeah he gangster
This child is the best 😂 #parenting #dadops
Took the kiddo (age 15) to see Skinny Puppy tonight. It was her first industrial concert, and first time being in a sold out GA/all-standing situation. A little stressful at first, but she pulled through and ended up having a great time. I even caught her bopping along! ❤️🎶
Both of us had too much energy when we got home, so we stayed up chatting and guitaring and chilling with the cat and making late night nachos.
my boys are 10 today! Celebrations begin with fried Nutella, banana and bacon sandwiches for breakfast, a soothing concoction developed during the pandemic when spirits were low and home schooling was hard. After school there will be presents and smash bros and cheese fondue and cake and pie. On the weekend we'll do the other breakfast (chocolate chip pancakes) and the party and the other dinner (a "brick" of mac and cheese from a local deli).
The Boys and Girls Club (our after school care, a nonprofit) gave the kids a survey asking them to give their opinion about the various programs they offer and such. My 10yr old communist declared this "child labor" and refused to participate.
I can't even be mad.
Turns out I can still SOH CAH TOA, even without thinking about it for 30 years. #DadOps
Dingus, 10, has been telling people at school that they should watch O Brother, Where Art Thou. It tickles me to imagine the conversations that are occurring when his friends take this suggestion home to their parents. #DadOps
day off with the kids. we're having a level 20 battle royale. I built a barbarian/rogue/fighter with dual wielding which should be able to do 7d6 + 12 damage every turn (9d6 + 21 with action surge). rage, uncanny dodge, evasion abd stone's endurance meant I should hsve been more or less unstoppable. First round Dingus hit me with Tasha's hideous laughter, dropped a meteor swarm on me and then an 8th level disintegration. I've taken 150 damage and haven't hit him yet. 😃
Tonight we watched O Brother, Where Art Thou? with the 10yr olds and O the Conversations We Had. On language, on race, on how shit doesn't change. But also they liked it, and liked that they recognized the Odyssey, and Dingus wants the soundtrack added to his collection. I played It Takes a Nation of Millions... for them a couple of weeks ago too, for similar reasons: it's awesome and I love it and they should hear it, but also because it's a place to begin a conversation.
I don't know if any of this works, really, but I try to use art to introduce real world horror in the hopes that they will internalize its form and signaling without it being scary. So when we talk about how racism pervades this country and always has, we can draw a direct line from Trump's immigration policies to the Klan lynching Tommy; from MLK to Chuck D. But I never know if I'm doing it right.
Asked the kiddo if she'd want to go to some concerts with me, and she's now "sure why not"ed herself into Skinny Puppy and Ministry/Gary Numan/Frontline Assembly. In exchange I'm taking her to Lovejoy. #dadops
In just a couple of months my 10yr old son has gone from being in tears whenever he touched the cello to composing. I'm so proud of him for showing real perseverance. Today was the first time he said music was fun.
His brother is also killing it on the flute and is all in. this is all most very excellent. #parenting #dadops
@FerventGeek @agocs @anotarian @leonadato I wish to convene a general council of #dadops to force smoke alarm manufacturers to standardized the distance between the two screw holes on the round smoke alarms so I don't need to drill another hole every ten years when I replace them.
