Sur Les Festins de Pierre, je reviens sur le film "The Woman King" de Gyna Prince-Bythewood, sorti l'an dernier et qui met en vedette les Agojiés, guerrières d'élite du royaume du Dahomey, au XIXe siècle. Une bonne surprise, même si cela reste de l'aventure et du divertissement plutôt qu'un film historique scrupuleux (Hollywood l'est rarement). Rien que pour découvrir le sujet et pour les actrices principales, impressionnantes, il vaut le détour.

#ViolaDavis is a massive presence on screen in #TheWomanKing. The word that comes to mind is “gravitas.”

I know there is some political and historical controversy around the movie and its characterization of the #Dahomey kingdom. I will leave that to others.

The Woman King (2022), based on the #Agojie, an #WestAfrican all women warrior unit protecting the Kingdom of #Dahomey (now #Benin), is a fantastic #feminist action film. Viola Davis gives a performance of a lifetime while Thuso Mbedu is simply outstanding. It was a delight to watch this anti-colonial film with a majority Black woman cast questioning slavery, resisting #patriarchy & in the process illuminating lesser known gendered history of an African kingdom. Do watch!

#TheWomanKing: Strong action scenes and an even stronger cast help smooth over the script's occasionally iffy approach to its historical inspiration.

Vu "The Woman King" : c'est un bon film d'aventure-action, porté par un casting en pleine forme (mention spéciale à Viola Davis, impressionnante) et dont le sujet - les Agojies, guerrières d'élite du Dahomey au début du XIXe s. - apporte une bouffée de nouveauté trop rare à Hollywood ces derniers temps.
Le film idéalise les Agojies par l'intermédiaire de leur générale, Nanisca, un personnage fictif aux idées abolitionnistes. Mais ce n'est pas pire que ce qui s'est fait couramment dans d'autres films épiques librement inspirés de l'Histoire (*touss* "300" *touss*). Et le projet mérite d'être encouragé : réalisatrice aux commandes, casting en grande partie féminin et afro-américain, sujet puisé dans l'histoire africaine, pourquoi a-t-il fallu attendre si longtemps pour que ce film devienne possible ?
(Je mets la bande-annonce en VF car je ne supporte pas la musique de celle en VO. Dommage car la vraie BO du film est très bien.)
