The OP set up what I think is a false binary between 'good' and 'bad' designers; ignoring that the Silicon Valley design ecosystem incentivises chasing #dailyactiveuser numbers at almost any cost and that it took regulations to reign in the worst of this incentive.
So, it's not a case of good vs bad designers.
