An end of the week means time is out for most people working, and our #DailyJazz entry hits the nail on the head for that very reason: it's Dave Brubeck's "Time Further Out".
Most folks would have heard "Time Out", and its release of "Take Five" is for many the quintessential jazz track, but Brubeck did so much more.
Check out "Unsquare Dance" on this release for a track that's just as playful as "Take Five".

Today's entry to #DailyJazz comes from someone you'll see quite a few times on this list: Mingus.
Yep, it's time to get into the crazy playful nature of Charles Mingus with "Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus". Eight tracks of one of jazz's most creative bassists and a genuinely playful musician.
I'm not sure I could get through a week without listening to Mingus. He's just so much fun.

Yesterday's dose of Coltrane leads to today's #DailyJazz, which was clearly inspired, coming from a young musician you might not be aware of, but could just inspire you.
Joey Alexander started playing when he was nine, and he's 20 now. He's been on the jazz scene for some time and this album, "My Favourite Things", came out when he was 11. And it's a stellar album of great music played by a great young musician.

Coltrane is one of those amazing musicians just have to hear in jazz, partly because he's so good, but also because he inspires so many.
Today on #DailyJazz, we're looking at one of my favourites: My Favorite Things.
It's four tracks of brilliance by the late great John Coltrane alongside McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, and Steve Davis in a stunning set.

Something new for #DailyJazz on a Sunday, and it's from artists I've never heard of.
I always like to be surprised, and that's what I've found with "Outskirts of Town", an album delivering the soft but strong voice of Michael Stephenson played with the playful bass of Alexander Claffy and his band.
It's also one of those rarities you can also found on Bandcamp, so I've included that link, too.

Another Saturday live addition for #DailyJazz is one of my favourite mixes of rock and jazz, and one of the kings of rockabilly and swing: Brian Setzer.
The "Ultimate Collection Live" seems like it's the gig to end all gigs, taking live recordings from Canada and I think Japan, and throwing it all in one big set.
Having seen Setzer live in the Stray Cats, you can just hear the fun in this one!

It's Friday, so we've got something a little fun for #DailyJazz today. What happens when you put together some of the best musicians in the world and have an amazing producer record them?
You get a Jam Session. Verve's Jam Sessions were just that: long jams with big names, including Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Ben Webster, and more.
Have fun with Jam Session #1... it's a blast!

Wednesday's need something a little soft yet still playful, so today for #DailyJazz, we're checking into Scott Hamilton's chilled but still fun "Danish Ballads... & More".
I'll admit I don't know a lot of Danish jazz, or even Danish music in general. Scott isn't Danish, but he gives it his all with some sultry sax in an album deserving of a Wednesday for sure.

Released two years after yesterday's entry from Sonny Stitt is a favourite of mine from Milt Jackson and John Coltrane.
You're getting two masters at work today on #DailyJazz with a classic album "Bags & Trane". And seriously everything on this release is just great.
If you don't mind me, I'll be jamming to this with the biggest headphones I can find.

Let's start this Monday on #DailyJazz with something classic, and get right into Sonny Stitt.
An album to end the 50s, this is a great entry that kicks fast before mellowing slightly, and then giving you some more. It's a great mix of old school jazz and a lovely one you mightn't have heard before.

A new entry for #DailyJazz and one I've not heard from before, this entry is from Billy Childs with the album "The Winds of Change".
There's something about this album that reminds me of life in the city. The hurried nature of people, of cars and buses and trains. It's a vibe in a modern jazz album that's both calming and playful. Listen in.

It's Saturday and that means it's time for another stellar live set on #DailyJazz. Today, we're checking out one from Cannonball Adderley, another legend who will pop up a few more times.
It's a solid live set that goes beyond the obvious awesome title track "Mercy Mercy Mercy", with each letting you relive what was clearly a fun night in the 60s.
A totally awesome album that can make you feel like you're a part of the audience.

If CDs could show wear, this one in my collection would have so much: Mel Torme's "Best of the Concord Years".
If you know me, you know I'm very specific about the crooners I like. Sinatra is great, but I love Mel Torme. He's a jazz singer, nailing the sound and delivery with so much panache. And this collection just sells it.
Everything is great, but "Day In Day Out" is a major highlight for me, making this perfect for #DailyJazz.

If you've not heard the name Christian McBride before, this #DailyJazz entry will intro you the right way. In fact, every McBride release is pretty great, but "Gettin' To It" really gets you into the bassist's style fantastically.
Every track on this release is great, but I particularly love the bass flavour of "Too Close To Comfort" and the soul of "Black Moon", to name a few. This is a great album to check out.

Mondays can need a bit of whimsy, so for #DailyJazz today we have a playful album from none other than Thelonious Monk.
Side note: how did it take a month for me to get to Monk?!
Easily one of the most playful and creative jazz pianists, Monk's "Alone in San Francisco" is a creative album worth listening to on a Monday. Or any day, really. Monk is just that awesome.

A name I've not heard of enters #DailyJazz with a sound not unlike what Joey DeFrancesco performances are like, but with a totally different name.
Until this past week, I'd not heard of Gur Liraz, a guitarist from Israel with a great vibe to his music and some solid musicians alongside.
"Squiggles" is a solid new release and worth a listen.

Today for our Saturday live addition to #DailyJazz, one of the most fun live jazz sets I've ever heard a recording of.
This is easily one of Diana Krall's best, delivering a stand out performance with some great musicians, including John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, and others. It's a big ball of fun that makes me wish I was there to see it live!

I'm in the mood for a bit of "West Side Story", but in jazz, you have a pretty big choice for what you want to listen to with this musical.
For #DailyJazz, we're checking out one by the Oscar Peterson Trio, the band behind Ella & Louis yesterday...
It's seven tracks of the brilliant West Side Story soundtrack made into upbeat jazz by three talented musicians: Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. Legendary.

A slightly slower album for a slightly slower mid-week day, the duo of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman certainly has something in an album of the same name.
Ideal for anytime listening, but also on a Wednesday for #DailyJazz, this is one of those albums where two masters -- one on instrument and one on vocals -- play with another great band, including McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. Check it out.

Ray is one of those musicians you might not connect jazz with, but he's definitely that. And to kick off #DailyJazz in August, we're starting with the genius of Ray Charles.
Arranged by Quincy Jones (who we've not gotten to yet!), this is a masterful collection of jazz and blues worth listening to.
