Had a quick video chat with a friend who's been living in Costa Rica for the last month or so. I told her about the whole #DAIR fiasco, and she was pretty surprised.

Back at #DAIR, Raesetje Sefala presented some really eye-opening research on using #MachineLearning to model the geographic areas of what are historically-known as "townships" in South Africa

I might have some of this historical context wrong & if so please forgive, but my understanding is that these are no longer recognized municipal areas since apartheid, but lumping them in with wealthier suburbs has caused incorrect assumptions about resource distribution to poorer areas

The #DAIR mission statement as presented by @milamiceli was incredibly impressive -- clear languages emphasizing working WITH communities & activists -- privileging perspectives of people on the ground, truly a breath of fresh air after seeing too many people who "know better" or are coming in to "solve it with tech" so to speak

Truly the #ResponsibleAI future I would like to see. Gosh I would like to see EVERY time we talk about #ArtificialIntelligence that we ask all those same questions
