Day 41 of the #30MoreSongsChallenge - A Hidden Gem. I saw #DakhaBrakha - a Ukrainian, I dunno, folkhop? band - last night. And they were so, so good. It was the first real show I've been to since Covid. The theater was great - the sound was crystal clear. The visuals tied their music into the struggle for self-determination in Ukraine. The music itself - the eerie melodies, the harmony of the four voices, the pounding drums. It didn't matter that I don't speak Ukrainian - message received loud and clear. it's been a very rough 5 years. but 2022 was actually pretty remarkable in retrospect. i discovered #dakhabrakha. we went to see #bauhaus and their opener was a local #tuvaldan #throatsing er who was exceptional. and i got to see #dakhabraka perform in person their score to the 1930 ukrainian film #earth. i got to sit in on an undergrad class at yale by #timsnyder. #lawandcrime provided legal education via trial primary source material. i learned a LOT i was deficient in. This ukrainian folk band shall bring you all some good vibes to this evening. I'd really love to see them live some day, hopefully Ukraine kicks their oppressor in the nuts big time so the rich culture of their country gets to bloom again without any interference.
