Heating up a Damascus hunter for heat treat. During this process, the steel is brought up to critical temperature, then plunged into warmed oil. This rapidly cools the steel, locking the crystalline structure into place. This structure is very hard, but brittle, so it will then be heated just enough to allow that structure to relax and loosen slightly.

Ferric chloride is a key tool in revealing the patern in patern welded, called Damascus, steel. Here is how you make it. Be careful as it does release combustible fumes and has an exothermic reaction during the process. This etchant is very strong and should be cut with distilled water before use.
