Whereas the concept of #knighthood and the title "sir" are likely to be well understood outside #UK the same may not true of #damehood. The title "dame" does correspond to "sir" and constitutes an honour equivalent to #knighthood. However there is also a very different sort of dame also. The term is given to a male actor playing the role of an elderly woman in a #pantomime during the #christmas season.

@harriettmb Let her keep the #Damehood as well. It is an out-dated symbol of a long dead era! Bit like Arlene herself.

@PARLEY It's good for the state to offer public honours to those who have distinguished themselves in fields that benefit the common good.

Of course those offered honours should be able to refuse them, for whatever reason.
