Great Albums, 1970s, No. 29: #TomPettyAndTheHeartbreakers – #DamnTheTorpedoes (1979). This LP brought Petty’s songwriting and The Heartbreakers’ playing into sharp focus after two energetic but inconsistent earlier LPs. “Refugee,” “Here Comes My Girl,” and other standout tracks combine sixties jangle and rootsy Americana with the urgency of the post-punk movement. The perfect soundtrack for a trip down the highway in an open-topped car.
