Well, I accomplished the goal I set out to do, which was to blend the flash more and end up with softer, more flat lighting, but, honestly, I think it's kind of boring, and doesn't suit the style of dance. I'm back at it in Seattle tonight, and I plan to return to a bit harsher, more dramatic light, a wider angle lens, and I hope to en up with more energetic shots with higher contrast.

I'm off tonight to photograph more swing dancing. My goal tonight is to aim for a more pleasing compromise between ambient light and flash, while still freezing motion. (Wedding photographers have a tough job, I'm learning).

A single speed light, on camera, but bounced behind me was insufficient power. Tonight I'm setting up a couple speedlights off camera to bounce off the wall, and another across the room to back light. We'll see.

Six hour round trip drive and 2 hours shooting the dress rehearsal, so I'm wiped, but I'm also wide awake at 2:30am, so I pulled one shot off the card to post here.

This is from the Bellingham Repertory Dance Collective's new show, Gravitate, which opens tomorrow...well...today.

I wasn't sure how this would turn out, but the duet dancers are stationary in parts and the other dancers are circling around them, so I thought it would be interesting to slow the shutter down to 1/5th of a second and see if I could catch the duet dancers frozen with the other dancers in motion.
