Daniel O'Connell (Dónall Ó Conaill) was born on 6 August 1775 in Cahersiveen, County Kerry. Hailed in his time as The Liberator, he was the acknowledged political leader of Ireland's Roman Catholic majority in the first half of the 19th century. O'Connell championed the rights and liberties of people throughout the world including those of peasants in India, Maoris in New Zealand, Aborigines in Australia and Jews in Europe.

O'Connell had defeated William Vesey-FitzGerald in a by-election on 5 July 1828, but could not take his seat until the Catholic Emancipation Act 1829 was passed parliament.uk/about/living-her

If you need to relax after the World Cup final, how about a video on Derrynane Abbey, Kerry. Little is known about it, but it is said to have been founded in the 6th century by St Finian. Associated with Daniel O'Connell, his wife and other relatives are buried there
