Has anyone else noticed the immense amount of Facebook/Meta shilling on #DaringFireball as of late? Seems like Gruber’s been their biggest cheerleader recently.

Took me a bit to figure why @gruber didn’t write anything about vision pro yet: #freshrss stopped scraping #daringfireball. It absolutely pulls the updates from the other feeds, and there isn’t anything semantically wrong with that one feed. It just... doesn’t update anymore.

Man, self-hosting the rss reader is a chore the first time since google shut down the reader and I can’t just drop the database. There's too much knowledge packed in my rss feeds.

Hey folks

Looking for help tracking down an article. It was posted (IIRC) by @gruber on FaringDireball this year. It was a critique of Apple Music looking at two use cases, people who buy music and those who stream it, and how Apple’s focus on streaming made the UI less useful for people who didn’t.

I need to quote part of it for a blog post and search engines are failing me.

@gruber You should setup your own #DaringFireball instance! I did that using a VPS (to keep it away from my production server) and S3 storage in just a few hours after noticing @cabel 's spiffy instance and being curious about doing the same. It'd probably cost a bit more if you used Linode (although it'd make a great story when they sponsor the Talk Show); to make it as cheap as possible, I went with Ionos, since it isn't a critical system for me.

This is an inadvertent benefit of ChatGPT but also an interesting side-effect of Google's lack of interest in their search results. When you care more about ad sales and let SEO scumbags ruin your results then you open the door for this sort of thing.

I've followed John Gruber for years. His Daring Fireball website is one of the most insightful Apple commentary sites.

But John has become a bit of an apologist for Twitter over the last little while. I find this very sad.

Sorry, John, but until you recognise that just because *your* experience of Twitter is "ok" doesn’t' mean that supporting a clearly fascist owner is right.

So I'll be visiting Daring Fireball a lot less until this changes.

If most of those drops in the bucket are aimed directly at a few people then that _would_ be a hellscape for those few. If they’re circulated in an echo chamber, they stand a chance of amplification into action.
