Just when I thought they were gone.

I took this photo a bit more than a week ago. At that time, I thought all of the dark eyed juncos were gone. I guess not.

Watch it!

This dark eyed junco, sitting on a crepe myrtle seed pod, looks like it almost lost its balance.

Wow did I get that wrong 🥴

This is a dark eyed junco. I intended to post a tufted titmouse and even had this photo in the tufted titmouse folder. So, I processed it and got it ready to post and thought 🤔 "you know that looks a little off, maybe I should check it." Well, I checked the photo with the Merlin Bird ID app and the rest is history.

Instead of a tufted titmouse here is a dark eyed junco. I thought these birds left to go North already, apparently not.

Yodel Le He Hoo 🎶🎵

This dark-eyed junco appears to sing out on top of my fence. There was a lot of noise in the original photo, and I cropped very far in, so it almost looks like a painting instead of a photograph.

"Male Dark-eyed Juncos sing a sweet, high-pitched trill that sounds similar to the songs of the Chipping Sparrow and Pine Warbler. All three species are often found in the same habitat, posing a unique auditory challenge to birders." - abcbirds.org

Dark-Eyed Junco

This is a decent photo of a dark eyed junco. I catch them in a tree less often than on the ground. There are still some around, although I expect that they leave for the north soon.

"You can find Dark-eyed Juncos by walking around open, partially wooded areas with understory for cover. Keep your eyes on the ground and listen for their twittering call or their trilling song. If they are flushed from the ground, look for an overall gray or dark brown bird with obvious, white outer tail feathers." - allaboutbirds.org

I have become very fond of Dark-eyed juncos recently. I used to overlook them due to their subdued plumage, however, their friendly and sweet disposition has won me over.

North American Grumpy Bird

I just think that this dark-eyed junco looks like it got up on the wrong side of the bed. 😂

"The Dark-eyed Junco was classified as five separate species until the 1970s, when the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) combined them, based on the most current scientific data. The AOU then subdivided the newly created species into separate groups, each with its previous common and scientific names: Slate-colored Junco (hyemalis); White-winged Junco (aikeni); Oregon Junco (oreganus); Gray-headed Junco (caniceps); and Guadalupe Junco (insularis)." - abcbirds.org

Cold snaps. Sky blues. I took D out for a brief wander around a nearby wetlands. Birds were out enjoying the sunshine. is a common forest around these parts. They were in mode to stay warm. They have such sweet eyes...

Dare-Eyed Junco

I took this photo yesterday. It was very cloudy and dark all day. There were a lot of birds around so I took may photos. The first were very under exposed, so I deleted most of those and adjusted ISO on my camera. This photo turned out okay.

"Juncos are the "snowbirds" of the middle latitudes. Over most of the eastern United States, they appear as winter sets in, and then retreat northward each spring. Other juncos are year-round residents, retreating into woodlands during the breeding season, or, like those of the Appalachian Mountains, moving to higher elevations during the warmer months." - allaboutbirds.org

Dark Eyed Junco

I've been setting my camera to allow for a little greater depth of field. Too many of my photographs were being spoiled because my camera focused on foliage in front of the subject.
