Well I set out to get just a little bit of visibility of what's going on on my LAN #network, and I wound up finding #darkstat https://unix4lyfe.org/darkstat/
which packet sniffs a network interface and collects stats like ip address, MAC address, packets sent and received, and for individual hosts which ports they're talking on etc. It's dramatically lighter weight than most tools which are designed to handle enterprise networks of thousands of machines. Run one binary and wait a minute or two...
