#DataBackup tip: if you back up full disk images, say, for a server so you can quickly overwrite with a known good state in case something goes wrong, use a tool to zero out the empty space. Bleachbit is cross platform, but dd is probably more convenient on unix systems (dd /dev/zero on a file till the disk fills up then delete the file).

This way, when you compress the disk image, the zeros get crushed down to almost nothing and you don't waste space storing deleted files you don't care about.
