According to The Economist Aug 19th
The International Energy Agency reckons data centres account for between 1.5% and 2% of global electricity consumption, roughly the same as the entire British economy. That is expected to rise to 4% by

@elaine you didn't stuff your machines with explosives to remote destroy them?

I mean I know some folks that did and they literally have their stuff in #CyberBunker-Style #datacenters and their machines will literally blow themselves up if handled without them disarming it.
Can't say where or who but rest assured ut's a legit bona-fide business...

Yes, this is a serious problem that people are often unaware of.
Here in Spain we are fighting desertification due to climate change and there is just a proliferation of hyperscale #DataCenters that can leave us without water.
The other day we participated in a BBC podcast advising on our topic #Water and #DataCenters. And the reporter raised "the question":
❓ What could we do on an individual level to reduce the water consumption of our data?
And a shiver ran down our spine: Are we going to fall back into individualising blame for yet another polluting activity? 🤦♀️
What is this #IndividualisationOfBlame? Well, it is to focus on individual behaviours instead of structural elements or blaming the real culprits.
The same happened to us with the Carbon Footprint.
The #CarbonFootprint is a concept invented by British Petroleum to divert attention from their responsibility for #ClimateChange to individual people. So people would think their problem would be driving the car to their jobs rather than the responsibility of the oil companies and big corporations.

#DataCenters are often relatively easy to spot when you can see the roof. Other than that they're just big boxes.

#BigTech #Cloud #DataCenters #WaterScarcity #Drought: "We tend to think of the internet as immaterial, but websites exist in the real world as rows of servers that never turn off, filling data centers that need to be cooled to prevent technical failures. Operators such as Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft use a wide array of systems to do this; the most energy-efficient ones—such as cooling towers—typically evaporate water to chill the air circulating in the buildings.
With drought spreading around the globe, battles are emerging between data center operators and adjacent communities over local water supplies in places such as Chile, Uruguay and parts of the southwestern US. In the northern Netherlands, public outrage erupted last year when a local news outlet reported that a Microsoft Inc. data center complex was consuming more than four times as much water as the company had previously disclosed.
Some of the cooler, wetter hubs in northern Europe, such as Ireland and the Netherlands, have blocked the development of new data centers because of concerns about energy consumption, leading companies to start looking farther afield. Operators of hyperscale data centers, those with more than 5,000 servers, are migrating to places where water is plentiful, such as Norway, but also to drought-prone places like Italy and Spain where energy is cheaper—and where extreme heat is becoming the norm."
