Including this article, which psychologises the net and blames the problems caused by #DataFarming on digital communication in general. Classic "get off my lawn".
"If Congress wants to hold tech companies liable, there’s a ton of low-hanging fruit. The United States is embarrassingly behind in data-privacy protections. That means that right now, it’s profitable for tech companies to spy on kids and teens and micro-target them with addictive and damaging content. If it wasn’t profitable, they would be pressured to move on to different, less harmful business models."

Hey USAmericans, your govt is trying to wreck the internet for everyone. Please make them stop.
"On July 20, we’re launching a week of action to get loud about our opposition to legislation like #KOSA and #EARNIT and demanding that Congress focus on passing badly needed comprehensive privacy legislation to actually protect us from the harms of big tech companies and data brokers ..."

"You cannot complain about Facebook collecting your life’s history, while at the same time complaining that diaspora* cannot find your former classmates. You cannot complain about WhatsApp collecting your address book, while at the same time stating you do not use eMail because exchanging addresses is too cumbersome. You either get a system that knows who you are or a system that does not."

"The Chinese government doesn't need to extract our data from TikTok's server logs. They can just buy that data in the same marketplace that Google, Meta, and every other large business in the world shops at."

"as leftists, we feel that every cent that stays with the platform — particularly every cent that gets turned into profit and paid out to shareholders in dividends, for their invaluable contribution of Having Had Money Once — is a theft from the people doing the work, people who are earning less than minimum wage while peeing in bottles and falling asleep at the wheel."

"The paper ... provides a critical introduction to mechanism design... for researchers who study big data, platform capitalism... So far, most critical work in these areas has not engaged directly with this hybrid economic-engineering discipline, even though it is now central to the operations of platform firms, as well as other online networks and data-driven decision-making systems."

"The irony that data brokers claim that their “anonymized” data is risk-free is absurd: Their entire business model and marketing pitch rests on the premise that they can intimately and highly selectively track, understand, and microtarget individual people."

"But what the Christchurch Call doesn’t address is a much more fundamental question that governments should think about with urgency. Is it appropriate that the infrastructure to host citizen discourse and engagement is in the private and profit-oriented hands of multinational data monopolies?"

This is how much the decision-makers at for-profit companies respect your privacy folks...
“We should know when users leave their house, their commute to work, and everywhere they go throughout the day. Anything less is useless. We get a lot more than that from other tech companies.”

Hey Melon Usk, maybe it's time to consider selling the lemon you just bought to the people who use it instead of trying to make money by milking them for data and attention?
@parsley
FYI you can share Titter content with us without actually feeding traffic to their servers and exposing folks to their datafarming, by using a Nitter instance, like:
Anyone who still thinks selling audiences to advertisers is a viable way to fund media businesses in the digital age, please read this thread, starting here:

Ads aren't going away (sadly) and there are some niche cases where they still work. But the results are mostly bad for society (eg FarceBook and Titter). Time to get creative folks.

@jackyan That's what I was going for when I started using the term datafarm(ing). The phrase 'user domestication' hits on essentially the same metaphor; think humans as dairy cows and our data as the milk. I believe @Seirdy coined that phrase in this blog piece, which was the first place I saw it:

> The state of mind ... where truth becomes so unstable that it ceases to exist, we now induce in ourselves.
This bit I disagree with. In the anglophone world, it's induced in us by proprietary algorithms, the corporate owners of each centralized datafarming platform being its all-powerful Party.
In China, it's exactly as 1984 described it. The Party controls which platforms are accessible and its equivalent of MiniTru monitors and censors according to the current Party line.
