The #wikipedia page on #RAID would need some love, really.

To explain for instance that #hardwareRAID used strategies such as inline CRCs appended to oversized sectors (512b vs 520b) so that #DataIntegrity could be assured regardless of the reliability or lack thereof from a given drive & its firmware.

It's a lot more recent that these features were dropped for the ever-so-idiotic "more speed lol" reasons.

@mia @chjara Of course none of those filesystems provide any sort of #DataConsistency guarantees, they solely provide #DataIntegrity. That means any write that doesn't fit within a low-level transaction (in btrfs and maybe zfs) as well as all streaming writes done by a program are at risk of data corruption should the program crash or the power go out.

Any concerns of consistency have to be handled in software, such as a #database. Which basically no one does (for desktop programs, anyway). :/

As I understand it, #btrfs' (#ZFS & others have the same problem) guarantees do nothing for preserving the integrity of files being modified by programs that do incremental writes, rather than accumulating all the desired data in a buffer and writing it at once.

Why are we still assuming reliable power is a thing users have?

Here in #Canada we've had yet another demonstration it cannot be relied on.

@nytpu The reliability guarantees that can be taken for granted in #databases and nowhere else are also very nice.

#Filesystems are still not transactional beyond individual write(2) calls (assuming you set the flags for it to be fully synchronous too when open(2)-ing).

Power goes out while you're writing something? RIP whatever that file was.
