I listen to a lot of podcasts. I have been using Pocket Casts for iOS for many years. Their business model has changed over the years and now they charge a subscription fee and I just saw that I don’t have access to the links to the podcasts I subscribe to. I have requested all my userdata but what I recieved was a list of all the individual podcasts - not the links to the ‘feeds’. Reading through the #JustMyToots hashtag, I saw some posts about migration, and this led me to wonder... if anyone is working on (or has released) a tool to allow you to migrate your POSTS to another server, not just follows and followers? Migrating reactions may be tricky/not ok from a consent perspective, but original posts should be possible to move.

We went through this back in the LiveJournal days, when DreamJournal and other services made this possible, so people didn't lose all their post history. When this is possible with Fedi it will make moving instances less like leaving a whole social network.

Data portability tools need to be made for ALL socials btw

We aren't really truly respected as Digital Citizens in the social space until we are able to own ALL our data and MOVE it.

Imagine a world where we can take ALL our tweets, all our Facebook posts, all our MySpace posts, all our G+ posts and yes, all our LiveJournal posts, let's face it, many of us here have at least half a decade of those (that we all downloaded and archived, of course, which has been possible) and deposit them into Fedi, so people (or just ourselves) can search through them (if we want!)

But we should be enabling this at the VERY least for instance migration!

❓ Here are some questions to ask yourself when you select a blogging service/host:

1. Can you conveniently migrate your content away from the service if you decide to make a change down the line? Or does the service effectively lock you down once you're all set up?
2. See 1. above.

⚠️ Setting up your own site is easier than ever. So is falling into a trap where some services make it really difficult for you to ever move away if you decide to.

@mark @lrhodes agreed -- until you can take your content with you to another Mastodon instance I think the "just move to another server" rhetoric is either naive or disingenuous.

I’m interested in what a truly portable user profile might look like on Mastodon or the Fediverse as a whole, something that contained all my network, preferences, content, eventually even personalized algos. That I could easily between services.

What kind of industry might pop up around securing, backing up, and showing me a “personalized try before you migrate” experience if it truly was just a couple clicks to migrate?

If @EU_Competition@twitter.com managed to designate Twitter as a #DMA #gatekeeper (possible: Art. 3(8)) then tweeters would have the right to real-time #DataPortability. Archives could use this to let them share a real-time feed of their activity. (There’s always a #loveDMA angle 😉)

The #dataportability that #GDPR has tried to lawyer into existence since 2018 has _nothing_ on what is going on voluntarily for Twitter to Mastodon. Amazing.
