I may have misunderstood, but John mentioned downloading youtube videos. As it happens, the DataHoarder subreddit (/r/datahoarder) has something of a cult following behind the utility youtube-dl or yt-dl. It's a command line utility but there are a number of GUI shells available. It's open source so there shouldn't be any malware or malicious looking pages coming up.
