Some of my carrots from this year.
Carrots have a biennial life cycle. They grow edible roots the first year, then produce seeds in their second year.
It is somewhat involved to cleanly make specific crosses, but it is pretty easy to grow overwintered roots next to each other and let the pollinators do their thing. I had one dark-purple root in the parent population and enough hybrids turned up for my purposes.
