One of the interesting things that came out of ProPublica's expose, of billionaire activist Harlan Crow’s large unreported gifts to Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, is the public defense of Crow by those who benefit from his money.

With David French jumping from The Dispatch to The New York Times, I'm reminded of something he said in 2021:

“If Donald Trump doesn’t win or doesn’t run in 2024, but somebody who adopts the ethos of Donald Trump wins or runs as a Republican in 2024, I don’t see that as an improvement,” French told me. “I see that as sort of this cementing of the identity of the party behind this particular ethos.”

I had the great privilege of working with David at Kramer Levin some 20 years ago, and even though I disagreed about almost every major political issue I found him then, as I do now, one of the most intelligence and honorable voices in public discourse. He will be the best conservative voice at NYT since William Safire. Just wish he’d join Mastodon. #davidfrench.
