The Weight — The Band

THE ensemble rock classic, has been covered a zillion times. I admit, at first I just thought it was a great soundtrack song for the morning after scene in The Big Chill (movie that makes me think about life). I like that it’s about sharing each other’s burdens when life gets too heavy. (Quite the swing from I am a Rock yesterday, huh?)

THE ensemble rock classic, covered a zillion times, but it always has meaning… EXCEPT that time when Blake Shelton & his Voice team butchered it on TV—that came close to ruining The Weight forever for me. But I choose to remember The Band and/or Staples Singers or Aretha versions. Anyway, it’s about sharing each other’s burdens when life gets too heavy. I didn't complete #Day19 or #Day20 of #AdventOfCode2022.

Day 19 is as hard as day 16, with a complex path evaluation over an enormous tree. Skipping.

Day 20 don't appear to be hard, but I'm bogged by bugs of modular arithmetic, and by the way to swap elements: remove from an end and push into the other, instead of swap. No time enough today to fix more bugs. Skipping, regretfully.

Really similar to the elephants and valves one. Just a DFS for the maximum with some optimizations to reduce the search space. Interestingly enough, it runs in 0.33 seconds on my actual input, but takes 15 seconds on the example, which is different from a lot of problems that take way longer on the real input. I think it's because the smaller costs on the example balloon the search space.

Fairly disappointed with myself that I couldn't take the time to sit down and write a proper A* solution for #day19 #adventofcode, even though there were a few decent bound estimates.

Instead, I just banged at my keyboard, until enough memoization and ad hoc heuristics made it computable in sub-geological time…
