Most people wouldn’t find it difficult to answer questions about where they’re from or when they were born or what they did last Summer. Bethany can’t answer any of those things.

She remembers her father bringing her to Huerta Cove and enrolling her in high school. Before that it’s mostly a blur—just a few images of her mother in some kind of laboratory. That’s all she has of her mother. Her father is only around a few days a week, and she has no idea where he disappears to.

And if that isn’t bad enough, the school counselor and principal have been urging her to get one or both of her parents in for a meeting, because they’re concerned about her unusual home situation. This would be so much easier if she didn’t also find it difficult to lie.
