Sigh. Coworker habitually uses #oldname (is it appropriative to use #deadname if I'm not trans?) because he knew someone else with the same first name and she tolerated being called by that name. Whereas I chirp, "You can call me Indigo!" to try positively reinforcing it.

On this day, we recognize and celebrate #Trans communities in Canada and around the world.

#Transgender people are people whose gender identity is different from the gender they were thought to be at birth. Transgender is an umbrella term that actually includes many identities underneath it. There is no 'one' or 'right' way to be Trans.

One of the best ways to encourage Trans inclusion is with the correct use of #pronouns. When introducing yourself, also give your pronouns, and feel free to politely ask people for their preferred pronouns: this normalizes not assuming anyone's gender identity. Placing your own pronouns in public spaces like profiles also goes a long way. In addition, always respect a person's chosen name: never #deadname someone (using their name given at birth without their permission, if they are not actively using it or offering it in day to day life). Many Trans people have changed their name and/or gender but for many reasons have been unable to do so on their legal documents.

Always stand up for your Transgender friends, family, and co-workers. If you find someone is #misgendering or #misnaming someone, intercede and correct that person, so the person who is the target of being misgendered doesn't have to. It is very exhausting for Trans and Non-binary folks to have to constantly correct others, and we welcome assistance in this matter.

These practices are for everyone, including #cisgender individuals (people who identify as the gender they were assigned at birth).

The issue of punishment for misgendering or deadnaming doesn't appear to be a problem in Montana, according to Emily Dean, director of advocacy for the Montana School Boards Association. She said she was unaware of any students who had been punished for such actions.

People representing educational organizations, pediatricians, parents of transgender children and students testified against the bill, saying it would lead to unchallenged bullying and harassment as well as anxiety and depression among transgender students.

A survey by The Trevor Project in 2022 found that 45% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the previous year, but that those who were supported socially or at school reported lower rates.

"The problem with the bill is that it takes away the ability of schools and teachers and administrators to intervene when something becomes cruel, before it becomes physical,” Rossi said.

Montana schools would not be able to punish students who purposely misgender or deadname their transgender peers under a Republican-backed legislative proposal that opponents argue will increase bullying of children who are already struggling for acceptance.

The proposal, co-sponsored by more than two dozen GOP lawmakers, would declare that it’s not discrimination to use a transgender classmate’s legal name or refer to them by their birth gender. Schools would be prevented from adopting policies to punish students who do so.

@pschiller I have @iCloud & @me email addresses associated with my account that #deadname me as a #trans #nonbinary person. I have tried to get help from #Apple to remove them without losing 1000's of media purchases but apparently this is impossible. This feels like a huge letdown for our #LGBTQ community and I am sorry to message you here but no one from Apple will help me. Are you aware of this problem?
