amazing workshop held by Woven Ends Collective about radical death care, with scenarios and moving stories about end of life and beautiful community rituals. A common theme was the importance of having an Advance Directive, so that one’s wishes are honored. your designated friend can be responsible for decisions, including how your body is treated, rituals held, name on grave marker, and so on. Without that form, defaults to “legal” relatives (like parents, siblings). The collective emphasized *all* people really need this form regardless of age or health status, as unexpected deaths happen. “We’re trying to get all the young punks to complete an advance directive.” 🖤 it’s easy to fill out. The form is slightly different across states, some states require two witnesses, others require notary, or both. But it’s really easy, doesn’t require a lawyer. Lots of people filled out the form and had it notarized right there at the workshop. Because it’s a legal document, one must use their legal name on the form itself. And wait to sign it until you’re in front of the notary (if required) as they need to see you sign it. Give copies to your designated friend(s), doctor, keep one yourself. They suggested keeping it in your freezer as that’s where EMTs, Med Examiner etc. often look. I’ll keep copy in my car glove box too.
I know it’s hard to think about, but having this form completed will give peace of mind that the people you want to make these decisions can indeed make them. 🫂 #DeathCare #LGBTQ
There’s a magazine for just about every trade. This is one of them. The Casket and The Sunnyside used to be competing magazines but they must’ve merged at some point in history. There was a third one, The Weekly Shroud, but I don’t know much about it except for the title.
I first read about these in the photo/illustration credits of Charles Addams’ Dear Dead Days (1959) and now I finally tracked one down for myself! #vintage #antique #history #magazines #funeral #deathcare

It's pride month, and World Pride is on right now in Sydney. But have you thought about pride and equality at end of life, and in deathcare? Inclusive, respectful end of life and after-death care needs to be available to everyone - not just straight, white religious people.
There is a push to make radical and necessary changes, headed by celebrant Bronte Price and others in this space (including allies like me). Read more here, follow accounts like Bronte's and join the change movement in your local community.

I'm curious, my fellow #deathcare folks, how do we feel about the term "Tadophile" ?
For me, it feels exploitative somehow, but I cannot put my finger on why! I understand graveyard enthusiasm/enthusiasts (because same) but tadophile/tombstone tourism feels... icky.
Curious to hear other perspectives and thoughts!!

I'm so pleased to see River Arach's presentation on Modern Ancestor Worship at a death and dying event. When these events lean heavily on academic research and scholarship, they tend to reject spirituality and the positive effects an ancestral practice can have on grief and our views about death.

Birth doulas and end-of-life doulas are like the bookends of life; that's a clever way to put it.
I'm pleasantly surprised to see academics researching the role of spiritual healing in death and dying in a non-judgmental way and highlighting the importance of religious tolerance.
I am grateful for careful, smart journalism. Special thanks to Linda Bell for writing this piece for DiversityInc.
My fav quote:
“We forget that a funeral home needs to be a profit center,” says Haneman. “Every death is an opportunity for them to drive costs.”
