Y'know what's great about having a loved one need a specialty expensive prescription medication? When the system that's meant to supply it to you messes up, you can't order any new medications until it's solved, contacting the insurance company only results in them suggesting we pay over $4,000 for a bill that's more than our legal total out of pocket. Oh, and they need the drug this Friday.
Luckily my HR department was able to get them to figure it out, but multiple calls and emails from me and my partner only made us more worried and helpless. I'm so sick of how our insurance is setup

@dianor this is such a good podcast, that episode made me feel more grounded. I wasn’t imagining things.
This one was kick ass too. They talk about how mask mandates serve as messaging to those people who think if “it was actually a problem the government would do something”.
There’s also a good bit about Boston schools that had excellent ventilation & how some kept masks and some didn’t and the data showed masks made a difference.

"But the truth is that no one is healthy, because what health actually is, is something that encompasses way beyond the individual's own bodily state, and it encompasses things like feeling psychically safe and secure, like having clean air and clean water, having housing that's not commodified so heavily that three quarters of your income goes to your housing, counts as I think, a social determinant of health. And this is why your work and Engels' work are such touchstones for us, because it really sort of thinking through the ways that health becomes kind of like a mode of production,"*

It’s is not too late to start a mutual aid project in this ongoing pandemic. Now mutual aid starts by doing everything you can, to not exclude people. Doing everything you can to not fall into the ableist and COVID normalizing (and frankly eugenic) rhetoric, that now dominates the general discourse.
Anytime you organize an event you have the choice to either suggest a mask mandate or to organize a video conference (or a hybrid setting) that offers remote access to the meeting via video.
If you do not do this, you effectively exclude people (like myself) from participating. Many people, the immuno-compromised, the chronically ill, disabled people or even just people who want to remain cautious, will not be able to attend. We get excluded.
This is ableism! This caters to only able bodied people at the exclusion of the dis-abled! This ignores intersectionaility!
You might now ask, why aren’t you happy for us? Well it’s complicated. I am happy for you that you can attend a meeting without precautions. But i also worry, am stuck wondering if you are taking this insidious disease serious enough, if you are still well informed about it (did you know, that there is a 58% increase in diabetes even after “mild” cases of covid? [https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/02/risk-of-diabetes-rises-58-after-covid-even-amid-omicron-study-finds/]). And i am angry, that i don’t seem to count, that the small inconvenience of wearing a mask is too much to ask from you, just so i could participate. And finally i am sad and i feel isolated, not seeing a future here. I am despairing to witness the circle of my political friends and comrades drift away into ableist territory, connections lost, friendships broken.
So it’s a heavy emotional mix.
And really, is it too much to ask to simply wear a mask or organize a video link? I don’t think so.
Yes, everyone is tired of the pandemic, me too. But the price (heartache, lost solidarity, despair etc.) we will have to pay for this increase in ableism, will burden us for years to come.

A thought that's been percolating that I can finally articulate: We tend to attribute the #BlackLivesMatter uprisings of 2020 to the stress of #covid and the fact that distractions like sports were taken away. That's probably true, but I think there's more. On the #DeathPanel podcast, they had an episode where they noted that #masking during the #pandemic was so offensive to #neoliberalism because it replaced individualism with solidarity (1/2)

If you care about #Covid prevention, or #Healthcare or preventing mass #disability please listen to this episode.
What do y’all think is going to happen when the health emergency ends and covid testing & treatment has moved to the private sector?
We really can’t let this happen.
The #BidenCult who thinks he’s some savior really need to understand how bad this is.

We discuss a recent piece in the New Yorker called "The Case for Masking Forever" which presents itself as a profile of the group The People's CDC but instead, we argue, is a veritable hit piece on the idea of covid advocacy itself.

Just stumbled upon this conversation with Beatrice Adler-Bolton and Artie Vierkant from #DeathPanel about #HealthCommunism
(I'll only read this article after I've finished reading the book...)
https://newrepublic.com/article/168453/medicare-not-enough-health-communism-book-review
@kirsties Thank you! That really means a lot to me.
I'm trying to write more on the topic (because it matters so, so much), but first I want to get to grips with the #HealthCommunism book from the people of the #DeathPanel podcast. Have you come across that one already? I'm reading it this week, and will post about it here.
This week I'll read Health Communism by Adler-Bolton and Vierkant (from #DeathPanel), and I'll collect a summary and some reflections on here.
Look for #HealthCommunism on my timeline and let me know what you think (we can even read the book together)
Oh really?! #Canada is moving towards a #deathpanel?
What does this remind you of?
Oh Canada… 🇨🇦
