The desire for #democracy among populations around the world often leads undemocratic rulers to pretend at democracy. This requires looking past rhetoric to the reality on the ground.

In #Chad, the reality is military dictatorship and instability: #Repression and# violence have continued since the October 20 demonstrations, highlighting nothing more than continuity with the repressive political tradition of the #Déby family, under which the Chadian population has suffered for decades.

His son Mahamat's efforts to hold onto power indefinitely and sweep its violent repression under the rug will likely continue. However, more domestic and international actors are calling attention to the untenable situation.

#Chad's govt under Mahamat #Déby is the same regime as under his father: a military #dictatorship that is fundamentally non-inclusive, unstable, and not interested in giving up power. Its attempts to present itself as stable, inclusive, & committed to a democratic transition are solely an illusion.
