This is really cool, but it occurs to me that while APRS is a fairly decentralized system, APRS-IS could be seen as a single point of failure.

Not sure where APRS-IS is hosted, but surely the server(s) could also lose power?

OTOH, this might be a situation where having a central location to which all available data is funneled has more advantages than disadvantages.

Perhaps the real reason for disallowing cameras in federal courtrooms is to protect the levers of ruling-class power, e.g., by filtering through the "mainstream" (ruling-class controlled) media.

Every time some petty dictator "shuts off" the internet in their country, it should remind us that we need another internet. Or dozens. Or millions.

The technology was designed to be redundant, but in our laziness, we have allowed gatekeepers and choke points to creep in - places where authoritarians can apply censorship.

The internet is the vehicle for our shared culture. It is far too important to let ANYONE access to an "off switch".

I learned about @iffybooks from old videos from an event called Mesh Jam. It was an event about mesh networking, building community wireless networks, and basically taking #decentralization to the next level.

I've never personally been there, but the event was free to the organizers and the attendees. Iffy is clearly run by good people. If you're in a position to help them out, please do. I want more talks about how to #decentralize everything!

To illustrate this further, @CCC had to literally close down registrations for a long time on their #XMPP server [ http://jabber.ccc.de ] for that reason:
