We know that technology is easy, but people are hard. Therefore, we need more SSI experiments and pilots focusing primarily on the use cases and first-class user experience - in addition to technology proofs-of-concept. Mastering the high-level building blocks of SSI and applying them to your use case is even more essential than selecting the correct tooling.

Currently building my agenda at . Like every year there are hard choices and thankfully replays are available to go through everything we miss.

Of course this year and will be largely commented.

I also see that is getting more space. Is it finally ready for deployment at standard companies?

will be one of the most important topic in the (near) future and , among the others, will be definitely one of the most interesting for me.

Ownership of online identities will be no longer provided by companies like or it is a digitally shared connection that all parties to the relationship are committed to maintaining over time, based on the direct relationships we have in the real world.

The European Digital Identity () Wallet Architecture and Reference Framework (ARF) v1.0 has been released.

⟨ " The purpose of the document is to provide a set of the specifications needed to develop an interoperable European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet Solution based on common standards and practices. " ⟩

The digital wallet is the killer app for the completely open source hardware and software “digital mobile safe” program led by mudge (aka Peiter) Zatko, at Google’s Advanced Technologies and Projects (ATAP) Group back in 2015. We need it today!

The “Tragedy of the Commons” which posits that “Humans, when left to their own devices, compete with one another for resources until the resources run out.” has been debunked.

Open source and what not to do!

Good decisions can flow from good data. Good data is rich with meaning and relationships.

Stripping the value from data to “improve the developer experience” is the wrong way to address the complexity of good data, and enable its use in practice.

Interoperability as an antidote to enshittification.

Knowledge Graphs with UN Web Semantics: Seeing the Global Supply Chain

⟨ " The essential part of my presentation was a live demo, building a supply chain knowledge graph from the bottom up. In doing so, I gradually introduced the full tech stack in play:

❖ The essentials of APIs, JSON and JSON Schema

❖ Adding semantics with JSON Linked Data

❖ Building Knowledge Graphs from LD files

❖ The important role of standardized Web Vocabularies " ⟩

Really interesting and valuable demo that shows why semantics and linked data are so important and useful.

Canadian National Technical Specification for Digital Credentials and Digital Trust Services

⟨ " Digital credentials are electronic representations of the physical certificates and IDs that enable the economy to function. Held in user-controlled digital wallets, they can include electronic versions of documents like plane tickets, driver’s licenses, university degrees and even certificates of incorporation for businesses. These applications are underpinned by technologies such as blockchain-based data registries and issuing and verifying systems that are collectively known as “digital trust services.”

This technical specification sets minimum requirements to ensure that digital credentials and trust services are interoperable between businesses and governments and create a seamless experience for users. " ⟩

The
standard enables secure, privacy respecting capabilities to allow individuals control over their personal data. The battle to appropriate this brand in order to market and sell non-standard-conforming products has begun.

It is time for U.S. Government agencies to take ownership of their own public outreach platforms!

Asymmetric wallet wars

Ensuring individuals have choice and decision authority when it comes to digital identity wallets is critical to changing, for the better, the current power imbalance between platforms and people.

Wrote up some thoughts about this at @ cyberforge.com/asymmetric-wall

A selector capability that is under the control of an individual is really important for the future.

Without it, we will end up in the same place with the same asymmetric power dynamics that currently exist!

If you take away all of the techno-utopianism surrounding the W3C Decentralized Identifiers () Standard w3.org/TR/did-core/, it provides the following concrete things:

❖ The ability to create a meaningless, but unique identifier that cannot be used for knowledge based authentication

❖ The ability for an entity (person / organization / device) to demonstrate ownership of above meaningless but unique identifier using a public/private cryptographic challenge/response mechanism i.e. PKI authentication a.k.a "DID Authentication"

❖ The ability, when provided the meaningless but unique identifier, to globally resolve it to a "DID Document" via a standardized mechanism, which is simply a JSON formatted text file that contains metadata such as the public keys associated with the DID and can be used for the above mentioned "DID Authentication" or to validate a credential/document that has been digitally signed with the corresponding private key.

This "DID resolution" is conceptually very akin to a DNS resolution and solves the traditionally hard problem of "I just got a digitally signed document -- where can I find the public key of the signer to validate the signature?"

Everything beyond the above items are the techno-utopian dreams and desires associated with the tech 🙂

DIDs provide an identifier for an entity. If you want to actually know more about that entity, you need to map a set of attributes to that DID -- which is where the standard comes into play by providing a standardized data model for representing those attributes.

and/or "" combines both standards to actually solve problems <shrug>
