Apropos of , , & : when I was small, my father knew that I was already very interested in history & especially , so when he went on a trip to Washington, he brought me large facsimiles of the , & , as well as a smaller folder with the texts of Declaration, Constitution, & Bill of Rights

In retrospect it seems appropriate that the set represented the completion of the promise of the Declaration

What is less well known is that, even once all adult white males were allowed to vote and the Bill of Rights guaranteed religious freedom, religious tests for public office remained in effect in some states: e.g. in Virginia until 1826, and in New Hampshire--where slavery remained legal till the end of the Civil War--until 1877.

As I observe , I think about the importance of the aspirations set out in the that “all [people] are created equal”; the “unalienable of , Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”; and that a just derives its authority from “consent of the governed”.

I think we need to remember the on-going struggle to ensure all citizens have the opportunity to grant their consent to be governed.
