Today is #DecorationDay in Canada.
The day was created on June 2, 1890 as a protest for veterans of the Battle of Ridgeway during the Fenian Raids of the 1860s.
By 1892, it was an annual event to recognize Canada's veterans.
The day has mostly been eclipsed by Remembrance Day.

May 30th: The predecessor of the #MemorialDay, then called #DecorationDay, is observed in the #UnitedStates for the first time. It is established with a proclamation by John A. Logan, the head of veterans group, the Grand Army of the Republic.

On Memorial Day, we honor and remember veterans and their service. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the observance was originally called Decoration Day three years after the Civil War ended on May 5, 1868. Through an act of Congress, the day officially became a national holiday in 1971.

I agree with the general idea, and the #DayOfTheDead (or #AllSoulsDay ) has the same purpose, and would give #Halloween more purpose (actually, its original purpose).

According to legend, in 1864 three local women visited a cemetery in #Boalsburg, #Pennsylvania to lay flowers on the graves of a father and son who had died in the #CivilWar. As the women left, they agreed to return the next year to remember not only their loved ones, but others. Their #tradition continued. And in 1868, May 30 was declared #DecorationDay across the country. In 1971 it became #MemorialDay.
