alright i don't suppose anyone knows what generation of #kindle i should buy second/third-hand to ensure i buy books that are using the old #DRM scheme that i can slice out to convert into an epub?

amazon no longer lets really old software get the old formats, so i think i need to just get a kindle i can use as a workbench for books i buy from amazon.

On #Linux, use #Calibre with two plugins. #DeACSM emulates ADE so you don't have to run that. #DeDRM will remove most DRM in conjunction with DeACSM.

I'm on #Linux as well. Recent magic arrived with the deACSM plugin...it emulates ADE which won't run on Linux. Paired with the #DeDRM tools, works a charm. Links:

Just read the instructions carefully. IIRR I had to find the .der file from DeACSM and stuf fit into NoDRM as the crypto key.

@raccoonformality @bookstodon Very biased here, as I often buy from Amazon but read on a Kobo device. That means I remove #DRM from #ebooks with #Calibre and #DeDRM. So the deal is, if you have a physical Kindle this is very easy, and without one, getting to be impossible. So if you want to liberate any Amazon purchases for reading elsewhere, the Kindle is the way to go. (Or if you just like the Kindle!)

Asking for a friend… What advantage does DeDRM have over BitTorrented versions of AMZ DRM books? She’s trying to figure out which would be more efficient.

@DNA They don't sell you the book. They sell you a revocable license to read it. Join the millions of #Calibre users - you can get your "own" copy they can't touch, if you want to. @mwlucas I usually buy them on Amazon (🤮) then #DeDRM. Where's that #Bandcamp for books (yeah, I know about Weightless Books nobody's on there).

#Audiobooks is another matter. There is libro.fm but it's just too expensive

If you're using a 7.0 beta release of the #DeDRM plugin with a very recent version of Calibre > 5.0 and the #ebooks #DRM stripping fails with an error like "ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'Crypto'", you will have to install the latest version of PyCryptodome to fix this issue. It worked for me on Arch :arch:, Calibre 5.8.1, DeDRM plugin 7.0b4 and python-pycryptodome 3.9.9-3.

Full disclosure, since the #deDRM plugin is only currently usable with Python2.7, you do have to build and use #Calibre in a virtualenv, given that this version of Python has end-of-lifed, and I've had to borrow some python2 bindings from an earlier version of Ubuntu since my current version got rid of them. But other than those hoops #Calibre does a great deDRM job.

I always download any #Amazon ebooks to my computer, notionally to manually transfer them to my #Kindle later, while actually I load them into #Calibre and then using the #deDRM plugin convert them to epub2 and then copy them to my tablet to read, after formatting them the way I want them in #Sigil.

That way, Amazon can't take them off me. I do have a Kindle, and use the code from it for the deDRM plugin, but I've not actually bothered to use it for reading on for years.

En général les #MenottesNumériques d’#Adobe peuvent être brisées via #AdobeDigitalEditions puis le plugin #DeDRM de #Calibre.
