#englischedu Nach Jahren mal wieder kurz getestet, ob #GoogleTranslate inzwischen verlässlich ist. Antwort: nein, selbst bei Englisch immer noch nicht. #DeepL, auch noch nicht perfekt, kommt klar mit der Bedeutung von "trust" in diesem Satz aus dem Wikipediaartikel über Theodor Roosevelt.

The last few weeks l've tried #Deepl Pro translation service (deepl.com, a lot can be accomplished using the free version ... the paid service comes with some promises concering data security, however). I was generally really happy with the results when translating longer pieces of text. Individual words or short sentences are better translated using an ordinary dictionary in my experience.

However, I use the service far to little to justify the subscription fee (to me). So I canceled my subscription in the end ... and was pleasently surprised that there are still subscriptions one can cancel by just pressing a button (no chatting with a customer agent, sending dead trees, etc.).

Genau hinsehen bei automatischen #Übersetzungen! Sonst wird aus dem "Anlagenkonvolut" - zugegeben nicht das schönste Wort - schnell mal die "plant group". #DeepL

Sehr interessant und deprimierend: Zumindest im Bereich des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens werden Übersetzungen offenbar mittlerweile an KI und z.B. #DeepL ausgelagert. Die Titel kosten dann trotzdem 80+ Euro.

@Gina If everyone wants to, ok. But not everyone wants and not everybody is able to do so. I think the latter is important to really be inclusive.

(I love translation projects of the big #FLOSS projects like #LibreOffice. I find it so great, because it empowers ppl!)

I personally absolutely enjoy reading people talking in #foreign languages and I take it as a challenge to learn their #language and #culture which is always connected to each other.

Of course I use #DeepL a lot along the way.

Je trouve ça tellement dommage... Demander un numéro de carte bleue pour avoir accès à l'API gratuite est, selon moi, un vrai souci. Pour deux raisons :

- on a peur
- un dev qui n'a pas de carte bancaire ne peut pas utiliser l'API pour apprendre à développer avec

Je comprends la raison, mais c'est déceptif.

I've just learned that DeepL FINALLY released its Firefox extension, and I got really excited. It seems to work really well on websites that aren't in your set language!

Sadly, it doesn't seem to work on Mastodon. The extension doesn't seem to detect other languages in what it thinks is a wholly English website on my end. I was really hoping I could use it to read non-English toots on PC, but I guess that'll have to wait. ✊ 😔

Die Spracherkennung von #Deepl ist noch etwas ausbaufähig - ist sonst ja schon ganz klasse, aber finnisch als englisch zu erkennen ist schon etwas speziell.
