A little known bit of Chinese American history relates to the Chinese who immigrated to live/work in the Deep South/
I saw 2 episodes of American Reframed on this topic that aired recently on PBS.
The first episode is "Far East, Deep South" about a Chinese American family who went about redicovering their roots in a small town in Mississippi called Pace.

What is common to both families specifically and to the Chinese who immigrated to the Deep South generally is that they each established grocery stores to serve the Black community, which was unserved by White businesses.
But you can find Asian grocery stores all over the US in Black communities (in Richmond CA,for example) not just in the South.

A couple of weeks ago an #archivist from #SouthCarolina emailed me out of the blue to tell me about a specific collection. Turns out she had #Googled “ #historian #poverty #south” and there I was.
The #collection is amazing. Shows how there was still widespread #malnutrition in the #rural #DeepSouth into the late #seventies & early #eighties.
This might be my next-next book. As #CVannWoodward said, “Mint juleps for the few, #pellagra for the crew!”
