i am irked by the use of tree metaphors for conveying a deep sense of unity in and with the or as a root of all wisdom on being.. but i just got way too moved by a passage on how hybrid plants with separated parents still thrive in places where one of the parents may have disappeared due to exogenous factors in the passage of

Most recent episode of Common Descent podcast has a great overview of geologic dating.

There are some places where I wish it was more in depth, but I think greater depth really requires a textbook - my favorite coverge of geologic dating is probably in the 2nd edition of _How to Build a Habitable Planet_ , by Wally Broecker and Charles Langmuir .

But I think that book is now 11 or 12 years old?

James Hutton met Robert Burns in 1787. Later that year, Burns chose to visit some of the sites discussed in Hutton’s THEORY OF THE EARTH. Is there an echo of Hutton’s “deep time”—oceans evaporating, rocks melting—to be heard in Burns’s “A Red, Red Rose” (pub. 1794)?

James Hutton (1726–1797), father of modern , was born , 3 June. One of the first European proponents of “deep time”, the concluding sentence of his 1788 paper “Theory of the Earth” has been called one of the most lyrical sentences in all of . It reads,

There would be no games like if it wasnt for i was the first open ended survival game. And on of the best examples of

I remember hunting mammoths (ironic...) in this game to use there tusk to get to the tail of the sun. As a kid, and I started my fascination with prehistory. Concepts such as would haunt me because of this game.

Up there with ape escape or baroque as my favorite weird ps1 game.

"Sweden approves nuclear waste storage site"

Both Sweden and Finland conducted extensive surveys of the "best" location for their deep geological nuclear waste storage site.

Coincidentally....both decided on sites that where their power plants are located.

How oddly convenient that the "best" location for millennia long waste storage is already owned by the industry and where they employ the local community. Two times!

Joelle Marlin's article about an extinct North American mammal, which has no descendants and is unlike any mammal living today, was amazing to me! For some reason, they kind of remind me of hobbits.

If you aren't following *Shannon Mattern* you may well be missing giant chunks of time re-examined, multi-disciplinary critical thinking, and a kind of hyper-sublime curiosity summoning new found critical epiphanies.

She explores historical medias, digital overlays onto archeology and social intersections that challenge our modern cultural reliance on siloed singular discipline knowledge bodies.

I just boosted one of her posts. Reflexively. Without examining it. It had the vibe. Upon examination I got lost in the rabbit hole. Wound up in an adjacent article on the same site regarding architecture and climate.

"Both material and social-cultural, both product and agent, architecture and climate therefore also have an opportunity to create alternative material and social-cultural configurations that nurture a different set of forces and functions. If architecture is climate, then climate breakdown is inherently accompanied by an architecture breakdown as well. Mind slightly blown by this article on our solar system travelling through interstellar space. The timescales of 2000 & 8 million years time are both incomprehensibly long and also but-a-blink-of-an-eye when thinking about the 4.5 billion year age of the Earth 🤯

Thinking about the NYT (and other) pieces about the collapse of both time and world view in pandemic, and pieces in Atlantic (and elsewhere) about the collapse of time and post worldview in the accumulating/ staggering local and global crises. These are such deeply related phenomena. Braudel had some things very right in terms of how we think about human history and what matters and when.
